Sylvia crafts unique, character-driven features with dark and humorous undertones.
She often finds herself writing female-led dramas with science fiction elements where she draws on her personal experience to create worlds where character connection is paramount.
Raised in a small farming community so bland that Dan and Eugene Levy felt pressed to dedicate an entire television show to its shittiness; she developed a love for the transportive nature of film, which provided a much needed escape.
After high school, she was fortunate enough to make her real-life escape to the big city where she studied fashion, a life-changing experience that led to a fruitful career although it never really felt like the right path for her.
While working as a designer, she took a screenwriting course at a local university and fell head-over-heels for the art form, discovering that it perfectly combined her love of story telling with her passion for film.
Equipped with her new skills, she began crafting strange worlds and stories based on her questions and experiences, an adventure she undertakes daily.
She’s had multiple projects place at AFF and Screencraft.
When Sylvia’s not clacking away at her keyboard, she’s immersed in the world of raising her three children, one of whom has been diagnosed with Autism and another who was born with a rare congenital heart defect. As one would imagine, she’s an advocate for disability rights, female-born ASD awareness and mental health care accessibility in the province of Ontario and, naturally, fucking hates Doug Ford.
In her very limited free time, Sylvia enjoys reading, playing video games (Starfield, Mass Effect, Skyrim, Metroid. Currently: Avowed & South Of Midnight) and, of course, going to the movies.
If you’re interested in working together, she’d love to hear from you. Sylvia.lafluer@gmail.com
